Tantalizing Tips for Western Living

1) Always leave a gate the way you found it, i.e., either open or closed.
2) Make sure smokes and matches are crushed dead out. Better yet, put them out in water. Carry cigarette butts, trash, and spent shotgun shells out with you.
3) Do not walk or drive on fields being irrigated, unless the road is gravel, even if the trail through the fields is a "designated access trail" on the maps. Please do not ignore "No Vehicle" signage! Our wrecker service is expensive!
4) When requesting beer on-tap, use the word "draw" rather than "draft."
5) Do not feed wild animals. Do not get between a sow bear and her cub or a cow moose and her calf. (We also recommend not petting porcupines, and staying upwind of skunks!) Cows and horses will not attack. Clap your hands and walk toward them to move them. DON'T DO THIS TO A BULL, DONKEY OR MULE! Face the bull, look determined, and back away slowly towards trees, vehicle, or something bigger than the bull! A 4 weight Sage will not stop these critters!
6) Do not use a flashlight at night to look at animals (the local game warden equates this with poaching).
7) Do not pet or feed any of the livestock or ranch animals. Those cows are man eaters! If you feel this paragraph conflicts with 5) above, believe this paragraph!
8) Pets should not run loose. Unfortunate things can happen if they meet with a skunk, badger or porcupine, and even more unfortunate (and very permanent) things can happen if they're chasing livestock or wildlife.
9) Although highly unlikely, if you run into a trespasser, do not feel the need to take matters into your own hands or argue. If you can, advise them they are trespassing, get their name and license plate number and take a picture of them out of the water. Advise them that they are on private property and keep on fishing. Report description and license plates of any non ranch vehicle without appropriate access sticker to your Country Roads representative as soon as possible.
10) Yes, there are rattlesnakes. The good news is that they are tasty with beer and butter. The really good news is that our serpent friends are generally found in the high desert and desert alpine ecosystems above the riparian zones around the rivers. However, use your head! Look before you sit on a warm sunny rock, or before you clamber out of the river onto the bank. Snakes are generally much more frightened of you, than vice versa. Their reactions are defensive, not offensive.
11) Virtually all of the more complicated or lengthy ranch access roads have been marked to assist you in following your access directions. The markings are dark green signs with white arrows, and red or green signs specifying parking. Ranch boundaries on the rivers and otherwise are generally marked by distinctive red and white "No Trespassing, Violators Prosecuted" signage or orange paint. Please do not cross these boundaries without permission, or unless you have reserved fishing/hunting on the next ranch.
